Best New Indie Games For September 2020 Week 2

Another week, another batch of new and exciting indie games. In this week’s list of the best new indie games for September 2020 we look at some great new titles such as Star Renegades, and we also pay homage to the release of Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning as the original game was a hidden gem of fantasy and RPG excellence. With that said, let’s hop on over to the list.

1. Star Renegades

Release Date: 8 September 2020

Developer/Publisher: Massive Damage & Raw Fury

Love at first sight. That is how we would describe our initial meeting with Star Renegades. The graphics are simply gorgeous and offer a unique visual buffet for eyes to feast on. With dozens of new indie games being released every day, a game with a unique art style really stands out from the crowd.

But Star Renegades isn’t just eye candy, there is a lot of game beneath the graphics. The game is described as being a strategy RPG roguelite, and as you know that right up our alley. Star Renegades gives players a unique take on the mix of these genres, with procedurally generated missions and enemies that evolve based on your playstyle.

This means that you will have to adapt your strategy as you move through the game, as enemies will counter your popular ones. This is an exciting addition as turn-based games can become boring quite quickly if your “tank and spank” strategy works all the way through.

Star Renegades also places a large emphasis on synergy and bonds between the members of your team. You will unlock new ones as you progress, opening up fresh ways to play the game. You can also unlock and use new equipment and upgrades to maximise the power of your squad.

We think Star Renegades looks fantastic and will be keeping an eye on the reviews after it launches.

2. Redneck Ed: Astro Monster Show

Release Date: 10 September 2020

Developer/Publisher: Rustic Fantastic & 101XP

new indie games September 2020 Redneck Ed Astro Monster Show

Fighting games are a rare luxury in the gaming world, and only a few are released each year. Apart from the mainstream titles such as Mortal Kombat and the wrestling games, there are only a handful of other releases.

Redneck Ed tries to remedy this by giving us an arena fighting game to satisfy our need to hit things. Upon first sight we got a strong Cuphead vibe from the graphical style Redneck Ed uses. The environments are colorful and detailed, with lots of character and style.

The game adds an additional layer of gameplay to the fighting by giving us a story filled with mystery and mania, where we are on a quest to get back Ed’s (the player character) stolen face. In pursuit of your stolen face there are 15 levels you have to complete filled with enemies and ‘maniacal bosses’ built on top of a corrupted intergalactic entertainment industry.

On the surface it looks like Redneck Ed has the magic to deliver a great gaming experience, and we can’t wait until the 10th of September to get in the ring.

3. As Far As The Eye (A FATE)

Release Date: 10 September 2020

Developer/Publisher: Unexpected & Goblinz Studio, Maple Whispering Limited

new indie games September 2020 As Far As The Eye

Another roguelike in 2020, no surprise. But this time we have a roguelike turn-based resource-management game. A mix not explored much up to this point in time.

In an unexpected turn, you play as the wind. Yep, the wind. As the wind, you have to guide Pupils, a special tribe that has to reach the center of the word. The game is peaceful so you won’t have to wage war or anything of the sort, but your Pupils will have to contend with other natural disasters.

The game is built around a nomadic system where you always keep travelling toward the center of the earth. If you are too slow, the mysterious waters will engulf you, and if you travel too rapidly, your people will starve. Therefore, as the wind, and guiding force of the Pupils, you will have to manage their journey to have the right balance between moving and not moving.

Being a resource-management game, you will have to do all the normal agricultural and other gathering tasks to keep the granaries stocked and your Pupils happy. You also have to improve your Pupils through the technology tree to help them succeed in their journey.

The gameplay sounds amazing and because of the roguelike mechanics no run will ever be the same. A last point we would like to mention is the graphics. Similar to the other games on this week’s list of the best new indie games for September 2020, As Far As The Eye has a unique and beautiful graphical style which really stands out from the crowd.

We are looking forward to playing the game, as we think its unique blend of elements and mechanics will deliver a satisfying gaming experience.

4. Artificer Science of Magic

Release Date: 10 September 2020

Developer/Publisher: Psilocybe Games & Games Operators

new indie games September 2020 Artificer Science of Magic

For the adventurous types among us, Artificer Science of Magic offers a unique experience filled with discovery, magic and survival.

After your ship crashes on the mysterious planet of Alcor, you have to use your intellect and magical abilities to learn more about the world and survive the journey. You will dive into alchemy, rituals and artifacts to enable you to survive the horrors of the planet. One of the elements of the game we find exciting is the ability to dissect the monsters you kill. By dissecting them, you learn more about each monster and its weaknesses. This reminds us of the XCOM games where you capture some aliens and then dissect them to learn more about them.

From a graphical perspective, Artificer Science of Magic is also quite unique and stands out from many other indie game releases. It certainly takes some inspiration from Don’t Starve, but adds a lot of its own flavor to this style.

The world is a tough place right now, so have your adventures from the safety of your PC with Artificer Science of Magic.

5. Blazing Sails

Release Date: 9 September 2020 Early Access

Developer/Publisher: Get Up Games & Iceberg Interactive

new indie games September 2020 Blazing Sails

Sea of Thieves 2, oh wait…. Sea of Thieves Battle Royale, no… Now I remember, Blazing sails, a new pirate game hits the seas of Early Access this week. If you haven’t already guessed it, Blazing Sails draws heavily, and when I say heavily, I mean clone-level-heavily, from Sea of Thieves.

The graphical style and gameplay mechanics are extremely similar to Sea of Thieves with the new addition of a cork at the bottom of your ship. Pull out this cork and the enemy has trouble.

The open seas and adventurous voyages of Sea of Thieves are replaced by a combat focused experience where you try to be the last ship sailing. Sink all the enemy ships to win the match.

If you have played Sea of Thieves, Blazing Sails should feel familiar although it remains to be seen how well the ship controls are implemented here. Do we want another battle royale game? I certainly don’t, but I am willing to give Blazing Sails a chance to prove itself as being a unique and enjoyable game in its own right and not a clone of Sea of Thieves.

6. Vampire The Masquerade: Shadows of New York

Release Date: 10 September 2020

Developer/Publisher: Draw Distance

new indie games September 2020 Vampire the Masquerade: Shadows of New York

Unfortunately, the big vampire game we all waited for has been delayed to 2021. So instead we offer you an indie visual novel set in the world of Vampire The Masquerade, in the context of the Lasombra clan.

Visual novel-type games is a fantastic genre, and for those who have never tried one, you really should. This year we have had some great visual novels such as Necrobarista, and Vampire The Masquerade and the World of Darkness is a fantastic setting to experience.

If you like vampires and the intrigues of their societies and unlife, this one’s for you. Part of the allure of a visual novel game is the weight of your choices and seeing how they play out in the novel’s world. This is also true for Vampire the Masquerade: Shadows of New York as your choices matter in how the story is told.

If you like to do your reading by playing, don’t miss this release on the 10th of September 2020.

That’s all for this week, check in next Sunday to see which new indies games are coming your way in the third week of September 2020.
