Escape From Tarkov Buyers Guide – what edition should you buy?

With Escape From Tarkov gaining popularity among players who enjoy hardcore shooters, there has never been a better time to invest in the game than now. Battlestate Games are actively pushing updates, and new servers are being added regularly. Escape From Tarkov is a hardcore military simulator and it does not hold your hand at all. With no tutorial, you will have to search for guides and tips across the internet. The developers intended it to be this way, and this really is where knowledge becomes power, the more you know about the game, the bigger your advantage. Shroud once said on a stream that even though it’s such a hardcore shooter, anyone can be good it at. What he meant by that was that the game is 50% about your skill as an FPS player and 50% about your knowledge about the game. I completely agree with his statement.

When you are ready to make the purchase, you will have four different editions of the game to choose from. Each edition of the game offers the player something else, and I feel that there is an edition that will suit every player out there. Each edition has different stash sizes, bonus equipment and standing with traders.

Stash Size

Escape From Tarkov Stash

This is probably the most important factor to take note of when buying the game. One of the game’s mechanics is your stash, which lives outside of your character’s inventory. Think of it like your stash in Diablo 3 where you store all those legendary items you never use. Once you successfully extract from a raid, you will store the items you have gathered in your stash. There are multiple reasons for keeping items and they vary from collecting a certain amount of items for a quest to just being a hoarder and that’s ok. The bigger your stash, the more items you can hold. All the stashes in the game works with a cell structure and stash sizes differ from edition to edition. For example, some guns will take eight cells where painkillers will only take up one cell. As a result, you need open cells to store loot. As we explain the different editions of the game, you will see how many cells each edition’s stash offers.

Trader standing

Escape From Tarkov has multiple different traders who provide you with what you need to survive in its cruel universe. Each trader has different quests and quests not only give you rewards in terms of items and money, but also increases your standing with a specific trader. Traders can be leveled up and there are requirements for leveling them up including your  standing with the particular trader. You will need to have a certain amount of standing with a trader before they will level up.

Upgrade editions

Because there are four different editions of the game, they give you the option to upgrade your current version, which alters the price. If you bought the Standard edition, you can upgrade to the next version for the remaining difference in price. This creates a nice model for players who bought smaller editions of the game to try it out and ended up loving the game and are now ready to upgrade to a bigger edition.

Standard edition

Standard edition

This is the edition for players finding themselves on the fence about the game. This is also a popular edition that players receive as a gift from their friends. By the time you make your purchase decision, you have probably watched a couple of videos about the game, or heard some amazing war stories from your friends that play the game.

What do you get?

Basic stash 10×26 cells

The 10 x 26 cell size is to keep items you bought from traders and looted from raids, this means you have 260 cells to stash your loot. The Standard edition offers the player a small stash, it is the ideal size to keep you happy when starting out with the game. If you find that you grow out of this size, it either means you enjoy the game a lot or you don’t know which items to keep and which to sell. We wrote a guide about which items are useful to keep. If you find yourself in the position where you like the game, I would say it’s worth investing in upgrading from the Standard edition.

Equipment

You will receive a list of items to help you start your Escape From Tarkov experience.

  1. Knife (ER Bayonet)
  2. Tactical rig x2 (depends on selected faction)
  3. Backpack x2 (MBSS – 4×4 cells)
  4. Secure container (2×2)
  5. Grach or P226 pistol x3 (depends on selected faction)
  6. Pistol magazines x9
  7. Pistol ammo x180
  8. Makarov Pistol x3
  9. Pistol magazines x9
  10. Pistol ammo x150
  11. Canned meat x4
  12. Bottled water x3
  13. AI-2 medkit x6
  14. Bandages x6
  15. Splint x6
  16. 300k roubles
  17. AKS74U + 2 loaded magazines

It’s not a lot, but if you have a couple of good runs, you can quickly turn a profit and start building your Escape From Tarkov empire.

You will receive a secure container of 2×2 cells. A secure container is a small container which you can take into raids. You won’t lose the container or its contents when you die. You can use the 4 cells of space to store valuable items to ensure you keep those items when you die in the raid. This can mitigate some of your losses when you sell or use the items you kept.

Left Behind edition

Left Behind edition

This edition is a small upgrade from the Standard edition. I would say it is targeted towards the player that is looking to buy the game for the first time, but has more cash to spend. It has no significant bonus above the Standard edition.

What do you get?

Increased stash size of 10×36 cells

With one hundred more cells, you can definitely fit more items into your stash than with the Standard edition of the game. Again, this is a good edition for those who want to check out the game and understand the inventory constraints and benefits. The extra inventory space always makes a difference.

Equipment

You will receive a list of items to help you start your Escape From Tarkov experience.

  1. Knife (ER Bayonet)
  2. Tactical rig x2 (depends on selected faction)
  3. Backpack x2 (MBSS – 4×4 cells)
  4. Secure container (2×2)
  5. Grach or P226 pistol x4 (depends on selected faction)
  6. Pistol magazines x12
  7. Pistol ammo x180
  8. Makarov Pistol x3
  9. Pistol magazines x9
  10. Pistol ammo x150
  11. Canned meat x8
  12. Bottled water x6
  13. AI-2 medkit x9
  14. Bandages x9
  15. Splint x9
  16. 400k roubles
  17. AKS74U+2 loaded magazines
  18. АК74N+2 loaded magazines
  19. Salewa first aid kit
  20. RGD-5 grenade
  21. Additional backpack (MBSS – 4×4 slots)

The biggest benefit in terms of equipment would have to be the extra 100k Roubles and two extra weapons that you get when you buy this edition. You will also receive the same secure container as the Standard edition of the game.

Prepare for Escape edition

Prepare for Escape edition

This is where things get more serious. This edition caters for players who are ready to take the next step and really fall in love with the game. I played with this edition for about one and a half years, and it was perfect for me during that period.

What do you get?

Increased stash size of 10×46 cells

Now you can really feel the difference in stash size, you don’t have to think too hard where to put what, and it opens up the possibility for a bit more hoarding than the smaller editions. If you were wondering, don’t worry, you will have plenty of space to stash guns you looted from your enemies.

Equipment

You will receive a list of items to help you start your Escape From Tarkov experience.

  1. Knife (ER Bayonet)
  2. Tactical rig x2 (depends on selected faction)
  3. Backpack x2 (MBSS – 4×4 cells)
  4. Larger secure container (2×3)
  5. Grach or P226 pistol x4 (depends on selected faction)
  6. Pistol magazines x12
  7. Pistol ammo x180
  8. Makarov Pistol x3
  9. Pistol magazines x9
  10. Pistol ammo x150
  11. Canned meat x8
  12. Bottled water x6
  13. AI-2 medkit x9
  14. Bandages x9
  15. Splint x9
  16. 400k roubles
  17. AKS74U+2 loaded magazines
  18. АК74N+2 loaded magazines
  19. Salewa first aid kit
  20. RGD-5 grenade х2
  21. Additional backpack (MBSS – 4×4 slots)
  22. SMG Vityaz or HK MP5 + 2 loaded magazines (depending on selected faction)
  23. 1000 dollars
  24. Kiver helmet
  25. Pilad reflex sight
  26. IFAK first aid kit
  27. АК74 M1-B Ultimak handguard

This edition gives you the same amount of Roubles as the Left Behind edition, but it adds $1000 to your bank account. This enables you to trade with Peacekeeper right off the bat. Peacekeeper only accepts Dollars and will not trade for Roubles. What really got me to upgrade to this edition, is the larger secure container with 2×3 cells. This enables you to take more keys and medical supplies into raids to maximise your profit.

Trader standing

Battlestate Games’ website states that you will start with a good initial standing with all in-game traders. This is a massive upgrade, with smaller editions of the game you will start all traders on 0 standing, with this, they start you off at 0.20 with all traders. You can still do all the quests to gain more standing, but the head start enables you to hit level two traders sooner. Leveling up traders means you get access to more guns, modifications, etc. This saves you a lot of questing at the start of each wipe before you can level up your traders.

Edge of Darkness edition

Edge of Darkness edition

This is for players who know they will play this game for at least another year or more. Battlestate Games even made players with this edition stand out in the lobby by adding a little crown next to their names. They refer to this perk as a unique in-game ID, it’s not that unique when a lot of players buy the Edge of Darkness edition though. I ended up buying this edition a couple of months ago because I started running out of stash space, yes I am a bit of a hoarder and this helps feed my addiction.

What you get?

As listed on Battlestate Games’s site, you get instant access to the closed beta, you can jump straight into action.

Huge stash size of 10×66 cells

Once you upgrade from any other edition to the Edge of Darkness edition, you won’t know what to do with all the stash space at your disposal, and it is truly a huge stash. As I continued playing the game, this became the only edition that made sense for me to have and I do not regret my purchase decision one bit.

Equipment

You will receive a list of items to help you start your Escape From Tarkov experience.

  1. Tactical Tomahawk
  2. Tactical rig x2 (depends on selected faction)
  3. Backpack x2 (Tri-Zip – 5×6 cells)
  4. Unique secure gamma-container (3×3)
  5. Grach or P226 pistol x4 (depends on selected faction)
  6. Pistol magazines x12
  7. Pistol ammo x180
  8. Makarov Pistol x3
  9. Pistol magazines x9
  10. Pistol ammo x150
  11. Canned meat x8
  12. Bottled water x6
  13. AI-2 medkit x9
  14. Bandages x9
  15. Splint x9
  16. 400k roubles
  17. AKS74U+2 loaded magazines
  18. АК74N+2 loaded magazines
  19. Salewa first aid kit
  20. RGD-5 grenade х2
  21. SMG Vityaz or HK MP5 + 2 loaded magazines (depending on selected faction)
  22. 3000 dollars
  23. Kiver helmet
  24. Pilad reflex sight
  25. IFAK first aid kit
  26. АК74 M1-B Ultimak handguard
  27. Grizzly first aid kit
  28. Alfa tactical rig
  29. Morphine injector х2
  30. SV98 sniper rifle + 1 loaded magazine
  31. Silencerco Hybrid 46 silencer
  32. Silencerco Hybrid 46 silencer adaptor
  33. Pistol case (3×3)
  34. 6B43 6А body armor
  35. MPX submachine gun + 2 loaded magazines
  36. M4 LVOA-S handguard

Instead of the added $1000, you now receive $3000 and this is massive. You also get an array of guns which will last you a couple of rounds and really get you on your feet quickly. I would say the biggest and most valuable item in the game is the unique, secure gamma-container which boasts 3×3 cells. You can imagine all the items that you can take into the raid and get out of the raid when you have a container of this size.

Trader standing

The same +0.20 standing with traders applies as with the Prepare to Escape edition of the game. One could expect this if you pay an arm and a leg for the best edition the game has to offer.

Free access to all subsequent DLCs (Season pass)

This game has been in beta for quite a while, so I am not holding my breath for any potential DLC content.

Are you ready to buy Escape From Tarkov?

It’s all up to how much money you have to spend on games and to what extent you will play this game. If you can only afford the Standard edition, don’t worry too much about never getting a bigger secure container. With the hideout feature players can buy the bigger containers with in-game currency. If you start falling in love with the game, buy the Prepare for Escape edition and if you become a hardcore fan, go straight for the Edge of Darkness edition.

We here at Beards Swords and Shotguns are massive fans of Escape From Tarkov and we hope this buyer’s guide gave you enough information to help you decide which edition will be the best for you. We recommend you check out our guides section for the Escape From Tarkov content if you want to learn more about the game.

Hope to see you in raid soon,

Beards Swords and Shotguns crew
