How to get poison in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

With the latest entry into the Assassin’s Creed franchise, it thrusts you into the shoes of Eivor, a Norse warrior fighting on the shores of England. Similar to Origins and Odyssey, builds are a thing in AC Valhalla, and for those of us who prefer to stay true to our Assassin roots, poison is a tool of the trade. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla isn’t very clear on how you get poison and how it works, and you can spend quite a lot of skill points on poison nodes in the upgrade tree without being able to use them. In this short Assassin’s Creed Valhalla guide, we help you answer the question “how to get poison?” and show you the most important steps you have to take to start your venomous conquest of England.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, how to get poison – the short answer

Assassin's Creed Valhalla how to get poison

To get poison and apply it to your attacks, you have to unlock the ability by handing Hytham (the assassin representative in your base in England) 4 Order medallions. Once you hand over the medallions, you will receive a melee and ranged poison ability which you can use to get the fun started. There are other ways of gaining access to poison, such as using the Morrigan’s Guard light shield, but going through Hytham is the most consistent method.

In the rest of this article, we will provide some guidance to help get access to green goodness as soon as possible during your AC Valhalla playthrough.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, how to get poison – the slightly longer version

Assassin's Creed Valhalla Hytham
This is Hytham, quite important in your quest to get poison.

You now know that 4 Order medallions handed in with Hytham is your way to unlocking the poison ability. To reach this point, there are however a few things that need to be in place:

  1. You need to be in England and have the Hidden One’s Bureau constructed. If the Hidden One’s Bureau is not up and running in your settlement, you won’t have access to Hytham;
  2. You need to have 4 Order medallions in your inventory. You get these by assassinating members of the Order.

If you have these two things in place, you are well on your way to unlock the poison ability in AC Valhalla.

Getting your hands on 4 Order Medallions will take some time regardless of the choices you make. If you do a lot of exploration in Norway, you can be well over the 10-hour mark before being able to poison your enemies. Our suggestion would be to follow the main questline in Ledecestrescire and Grantebridgescire after which you should have enough medallions to get the ability.

Alternatively, you can hunt down Zealots across the map if you don’t want to play through the story. Take note that below level 80 or so these Zealots will be tough to bring down, and will probably be more trouble than it’s worth hunting them down.

If you take a look at the legend, you will see zealots at the very end of the list. If you see this on your map you can go hunting.

You leave Norway with one medallion, so how you get the other three is up to you once you hit English shores.

Poison in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

To wrap up this short guide on poison in AC valhalla, some notes on its use and how to maximise the ability. If you want to go all out with a poison build in AC Valhalla, you will need more than just 4 Order medallions. Each ability in the game can be upgraded, and these upgrades are significant in power. The base poison ability allows you to coat your blade in venom and for a short period your attacks will apply a poison debuff. The upgraded version of the ability is much better. With the upgrade, applying poison will cause Eivor to project a cloud of poison around the character applying the debuff to all caught in its radius. Couple this with Miasma from the Raven tree and group fights even on the highest difficulty becomes trivial as enemies die from the poison damage.

You will, however, need somewhere around 20 medallions for Hytham to unlock the upgraded ability. This means assassinating 20 members of the Order, which can take some time.

We hope our Assassins Creed Valhalla guide on how to get poison helped you toward your poison build. We highly recommend getting the second tier of the poison ability, get the Miasma ability from the Raven Tree, obtain Morrigan’s Guard, and see enemies melt in your clouds of poison!
